A New Chapter...

November 2024 — Phylbern Stud, and the long-established stud of Welsh Section B and Part-Bred Welsh ponies, today announced its move to a new base in Llangar, Denbighshire. Set between the Berwyn Mountains and the Dee Valley, the location offers natural pasture, natural waterfalls, and sheltered grazing and stabling—an environment long associated with the hardiness, temperament, and true type of the Welsh pony.

“For our family, this move is both practical and personal,” said Gareth Roberts, owner of Phylbern Stud. “The land here reflects the landscapes that shaped the Welsh pony. In many ways, we’re bringing the ponies—and our family story—back to their native roots.”
The Berwyn Mountains sit just south of the River Dee, where the Clwydian Range & Dee Valley National Landscape(formerly AONB) frames the northern slopes. The designation was first made in 1985 and extended in 2011 to include much of the Dee Valley from Corwen eastwards, reflecting the area’s exceptional scenery and cultural heritage. Clwydian Range and Dee Valley AONB Parts of the northern Berwyn that fall towards the Dee lie within the National Landscape; the higher, wilder core is protected internationally as the Berwyn & South Clwyd Mountains SAC and the Berwyn SPA for its blanket bog, upland heath and important birds such as hen harrier and merlin. The River Dee itself enters the National Landscape just west of Corwen, tying the mountains to a wider corridor of classic North-East Wales landmarks, trails and pasture—an environment perfectly suited to native Welsh ponies.

A brief History....

The stud was first established in the 1940's by May and Bernard Morehen on the outskirts of Cambridge.

Firstly breeding pure bred Arabian horses from Crabbett and Polish lines. The stud has exported horses all over the world and the bloodlines are still evident in the modern day breed.

Over the years the stud has won at most county shows and has successfully bred stock that has excelled in a range of spheres.

Noted Arabians that were bred at Phylbern include Royal Gold (exported to Denmark), Gromin (major prize winner and featured in the Horse and Hound publications) and Dancing Magic (Top sire and Ridden) etc.

Riding ponies were bred in the early 90's the most successful being Phylberns Brown Sauce who was a consistent major prize winner including at HOYS.

The stud now centres its breeding focus on the Welsh Section B pony since the early 90s. Still situated in the same village setting. Our aim is to breed Welsh ponies of type that maintain a 'pony like quality'.

Ponies produced and bred by the stud have been featured in the WPCS prize winners galley, gained championships throughout the country, exported overseas and gone on as breeding prospects at successful studs.
